Where Luxury Meets The Sky

Detroit Private Jet Charter

View Categories

Detroit has one of the strongest airline hubs in the country. Delta sends more than 348 peak-day departures from Metro to 106 nonstop destinations, which few cities the size of Detroit can match.

The trouble is that Detroit’s work does not happen in major cities. It happens at a stamping operation outside Kokomo, a supplier in Spring Hill, a test track across the Ontario border. The industry stretches from the Canadian side down through Ohio and Tennessee into Mexico, and almost none of it sits near a hub. Our Detroit private jet charter exists for those places, not for the routes Delta already flies.

This is also the only major American city that looks south into Canada. Windsor lies across the river, which puts a border crossing inside an ordinary working week.

Celebrity Jet Charter flies to the field nearest the work, not to the hub nearest the city.

Private Jet Charter Detroit: Matching the Airport to the Trip

Oakland County International Airport (PTK)

PTK lies five miles west of Pontiac, closest to Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham and Troy. That makes it the first to consider for anything starting north of downtown. Six operators have terminals there, Pentastar Aviation among them. Its 6,520-foot main runway takes a wide range of business aircraft, though an airliner charter above 30 seats needs 48 hours’ notice. US Customs clears on site.

Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET)

DET lies five miles northeast of downtown, the closest field to the business district and the shortest drive into the city. One number shapes who uses it: the single runway measures 5,090 ft, which limits the aircraft choices, especially for larger jets. Avflight operates the terminal here. For a Light Jet and a morning meeting downtown, nothing else comes close.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)

DTW sits fifteen miles southwest of downtown, with six runways and the widest range of aircraft of the three. It earns the call for the largest cabins, for long-range departures, and when part of your group continues on a scheduled flight. On a transatlantic leg it gives you aircraft the other two cannot accept, and its private terminals sit well away from the main concourses.

Factory Visits and the Towns Between Hubs

Factory visits are rarely one-offs, which is why our Detroit jet charter suits the pattern better than a hub does. Assistants booking these trips tend to know which airport each passenger prefers. Our Jetsetter Program gives members a concierge who has those details ready. Automotive shows this most clearly, with the Detroit Auto Show bringing the whole industry to town once a year. The same airport choice faces the downtown finance offices and the hospital and university campuses out at Ann Arbor.

A hub serves cities. Automotive happens in towns. Most of them have an airfield of their own. Kokomo’s lies four miles out, with a 6,000-foot runway long enough for a midsize jet. Reaching them through the hub means a connection, a long drive, or an overnight nobody wanted. Charter flights from Detroit land within a short drive of the factory instead. A supplier visit that takes two days on the airlines fits inside one.

The same pattern runs north into Ontario, where suppliers sit outside London and Kitchener. The two sides have shared an auto industry for a century, so the border adds a customs call and little else. Oakland County clears 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and CBP wants prior approval on every crossing, not only the late ones. Service between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and at weekends comes by written request.

The Florida Run and Empty Leg Flights Detroit

The Florida Run and Empty Leg Flights Detroit

Winter creates southbound demand from Michigan to Florida every year. Aircraft carry families down to Naples, Sarasota and Palm Beach, then fly home with nobody aboard. That northbound repositioning is where the savings sit.

What is open shifts from one day to the next. Our empty leg specials page carries the current list, and what are empty legs sets out how they price. The imbalance works one way, so southbound discounts are harder to find through the busiest winter weeks. Summer works the other way round, with weekend demand heading north toward Traverse City and the rest of northern Michigan.

What the Runway Decides

Runway length narrows the aircraft list faster than anything else on a Detroit booking, and it is the destination that does the narrowing. Runways out in the smaller towns are shorter than any of the three local fields. The smallest strip on the itinerary sets the aircraft for the whole trip.

Our King Air 200 seats up to eight and reaches about 1,750 nautical miles. It uses shorter regional runways than most jets, which makes it the practical choice for a trip to a town the airlines barely serve. Its cabin door also takes bulky equipment that most light jets cannot.

A Praetor 500 covers 3,340 nautical miles, enough to put a Mexican or Gulf coast site inside one leg. For a larger group, a Citation Longitude carries up to twelve. For transatlantic work, a Heavy Jet stages from Detroit Metropolitan.

Minimums, Customs Fees and De-icing

Short trips cost more per mile than long ones, and Detroit sees a lot of them. A flight out to Toledo sits well under an hour in the air. A light jet bills a two-hour minimum either way. Putting the outbound and the return on one booking spreads that minimum across both legs.

Crossing into Ontario adds its own line items. A customs user fee applies, and an after-hours clearance carries overtime charges on top of it. Winter adds de-icing to the bill, plus the odd runway restriction and the occasional diversion. Two terms worth knowing. Positioning is what it costs to bring the jet to you in the first place. Taxi time covers the minutes spent moving on the ground, billed at each end. Celebrity Jet Charter quotes every trip against the same published rates:

  • Turbo prop, very light and light jets bill a two-hour minimum.
  • Midsize, super-midsize and heavy jets bill three hours, and an airliner charter six.
  • Taxi time adds 12 minutes per leg on top of the hours flown.
  • Positioning, landing fees, fuel surcharge and catering sit outside the hourly rate.
  • Federal excise tax of 7.5% is extra, with a comparable fee on the Ontario legs.
  • Rates are estimates and can change.

Charter Flight Detroit: What Comes Back

Send us the town, not the airport. Many of the places on these trips have a field nobody outside the county has heard of. Finding the right one is our job rather than yours. Give us the date and the headcount, or use the quick quote form.

What comes back is a field, a cabin size and a number to work from. Sometimes the answer is a turboprop into a short strip rather than the jet you had in mind. Celebrity Jet Charter would rather tell you that than take the larger booking.
